Saturday and Sunday - Exploring the Myths
Power and Conciliation: the Abduction of Persephone
The Homeric Hymn to Demeter is the earliest "complete" portrayal of the rift between the
Greek Gods that surrounded the taking of Persephone, daughter of Demeter, by the King of
the Underworld for his bride.
Our approach to the myth of Demeter’s loss (for it is as much her story) will, through
discussion and ritual, confront what we’ve identified as its key points of power and its
Mysteries, and honor its outcome for what it appears to have been, an uneasy truce in a time
of cultural dissonance.
The Myth of Osiris
This myth embodies the catastrophe of death and the triumph of life over death by extraordinary
transformation. Pre-dynastic texts speak of His Mysteries and His Passion was celebrated
throughout ancient Egypt for more than 2000 years. While most people are familiar with the
myth as presented by Plutarch, our presentation will be based on Old Kingdom sources and
will attempt to replicate the Sacred dramas presented at His cultic centers.
The Descent of Inanna
Inanna’s journey is the original and quintessential story of the gaining of knowledge by
descending to the underworld, as well as the perils and possibilities of confronting the
Shadow Self. Discovered in cache of cuneiform tablets and fragments in the late 1800’s,
reassembled and translated over the following decades, the myth is multilayered and complex.
Remaining faithful to the most complete translation, we will follow Inanna’s journey
dramatically.
