Wheels of Fortune -
WoF!

For the past few years, several SEF members with buns of steel and calves of iron have been participating in various endurance bicycle rides (first in the Red Ribbon Ride, and this year in the Harbor to the Bay Ride) to raise money for Massachusetts AIDS service providers. The SEF Team has taken the name Wheels of Fortune, or WoF, pronounced Woof! The riders have included Captain Shawn Fields-Berry (who had been riding in the Red Ribbon Ride for many years before founding Team WoF), Cameron Calkins, George Popham, Runa, LoriJoy, and David Murray-McCarthy, each of whom have been riding diffferent mileages. In 2006, Team WoF set and surpassed a fundraising goal of $10,000.

We feel compelled to ride for many reasons: the continuing spread of AIDS is pandemic, continuing federal and state cuts in funding for HIV treatment and prevention programs, the struggles and deaths of friends with AIDS, and the conviction that we can do something about it.

WoF 2008 - The Wheels of Fortune Ride Again!

The Sun has come up from the south again, with titanium, carbon fiber and all sorts of alloys. Yea, verily, warm weather means training, as members of the SEF prepare for the Harbor to the Bay AIDS Benefit Bike Ride on September 20, 2008.

The Ride is a one day event, from Boston to Provincetown, with the option of riding from Cape Cod Canal to Provincetown. We have two riders committed to this event, and would love at least one more to form a Team. Even if you have not ridden a bike in years, you can still prepare for this event. Team WoF members will help you. This is a great ride, well supported, for an outstanding cause. For more information, please visit the ride’s website at: http://www.harbortothebay.org , and/or email Shawn at spinningwheels13@yahoo.com .

In 2005 and 2006, the SEF also assisted the Red Ribbon Ride itself by staffing Pit Stops: in 2005 we ran a Harry Potter-themed Pit Stop in Plainfield, and in 2006 we ran a Pirate Pit Stop at the Bolton Public Library. Duties included food service, traffic control, bike security and other light tasks to support the Riders.

We hope there will be an opportunity for us to do the same for the Harbor to the Bay Ride. The work is light, the company excellent, and you get to shmooze with a lot of buff cyclists, while supporting a great cause. It is also a chance for the SEF to get involved in community events like other mainstream churches. AND - it's more fun than humans should be allowed!
